The best intensive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) training camps to consider in 2019 and 2020

If you’re interested in furthering your jiu jitsu and having a holiday at the same time, a training camp could be a good idea.

Below are some great camps from a variety of gyms in a variety of locations around the world. Not only do you get to immerse yourself in improving your jiu jitsu, but you can also explore the location the camp is in. Some camps also include extras like daily surf lessons, yoga classes and meditation sessions.

Below is a list of camps still available at the time of writing for 2019 and 2020.

BJJ Globetrotters Zen Camp (Poland) – sold out

  • Where: Stara Wieś, Poland
  • When: 16 – 20 October

The BJJ Globetrotters Zen Camp is being held in a traditional Japanese-style village in a remote national park a number of hours south of Warsaw.

Training is held from the morning to night, with a combination of technique and open mat sessions. This is both a gi and no-gi camp, with two large mat spaces to service all participants.

The remote location means this camp is a great way to connect with your training in a distraction-free environment, and there are opportunities to relax in the surrounding rivers and woods.

As with many of BJJ Globetrotters camps, there are also opportunities for yoga, meditation and even free access to a sauna and sauna therapy to help your body cope with the high amount of training.

BJJ Globetrotters Arizona Camp – sold out

BJJ Globetrotters’ Arizona Camp is being held in Tempe, a college town only 30 minutes drive from Phoenix.

The camp is being held at Jay Pages Jiu-Jitsu Academy, a large and modern gym led by
Jay Pages, a Caio Terra 3rd degree black belt and champion BJJ competitor.

This is a five day camp with both gi and no-gi training, open mat opportunities and yoga classes. There are also outdoor BBQs planned at the gym, workshops, and you’re under four hours from the Grand Canyon if you want to do some sightseeing before or after the camp!

BJJ Globetrotters Caribbean Island Camp

  • Where: Saint Barthélemy

The Carribean Island Camp by BJJ Globetrotters is an opportunity to enjoy an intensive training camp and learn how to surf at the same time.

Located on the small volcanic island of Saint Barthélemy (240 km east of Puerto Rico), it’s surrounded by beautiful beaches.

As always, the training portion of this camp is intensive, with classes from morning to night, and a mix of gi and no-gi relevant sessions. There’s also the possibility of an outdoor cliff-side open mat session if weather permits!

In addition to the daily surf lessons, there are also opportunities for hiking, beach visits and scuba diving.

Note that airfares are not included in this price.

BJJ Camp Tenerife

  • Where: Tenerife, Spain
  • When: 30 Sep – 4 Oct, 7th Oct – 11 Oct

BJJ Camp Tenerife is headed by Bob Poppleton, a 3rd degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr with 20 years of training experience. 

There are two weeks to choose from, the first of which is focused on the gi and the second which is focused on no gi.

The gi week features guest instructor and British judo champion Steve Gawthorpe. The no gi week features the well known competitor, BJJ podcaster and strongman Daniel Strauss, also known as the Raspberry Ape. 

Bob’s training program for the camp is focused around a systematic approach to BJJ rather than an assortment of techniques, and there are five days of morning, afternoon and evening training.

There are also beginner’s surfing lessons and daily yoga activities.

Gracie Adventure Camp

  • Where: Miami Beach, Florida, USA
  • When: 21 – 24 November

The Gracie Adventure Camp has an instructor list that reads like a who’s-who of BJJ, with Renzo, Rillion and Roger Gracie all present and teaching sessions.

The camp is at the beachfront Confidante Hotel with a total of 15 hours of training if you stay for the full four days. There’s also unlimited access to the training facility if you want to train after the sessions are done.

Training sessions include a mix of techniques, specifics training, live sparring and open mat.

BJJ Summer Week

  • Where: Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy
  • When: 18 – 23 September
  • Confirmed instructors: Nick Brooks, Zé Radiola, Luca Anacoreta, Max Carvalho have been confirmed so far

The BJJ Summer Week camp is held in Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, known for its medieval monuments and beautiful beaches.

The training camp is comprised of three technical seminars and two open mat sessions per day along with other activities such as yoga, osteopathy and massage.

There are also cultural excursions in the city to enjoy in your downtime.

All lessons are held in English, and private lessons with the instructors are available too.

Absolute MMA Thailand Camp with Craig Jones

  • Where: Phuket, Thailand
  • When: 6 – 13 October 
  • Confirmed instructors: Craig Jones
  • How much: $999 USD (training only), $1599 USD (training and luxury accommodation with pool)
  • What’s included: 2x daily 1.5 hour training sessions, daily strength and conditioning sessions and seminar rashguard. Training and accommodation packages also include two 1-hour sports massages, breakfasts, welcome and farewell dinner and tours.

The Absolute MMA Camp in Thailand is perfect for Aussies who don’t want to make the trek to Europe.

It’s taught by champion black belt Craig Jones and includes two daily training sessions and strength and conditioning sessions. 

The camp itself is held at Absolute MMA Thailand in Rawai, which is an open air style gym with a full sized MMA cage and plenty of equipment and space.

If you pay for the accommodation package, there’s a number of extras included such as two 1-hour sports massages, breakfasts, and tours to Bangla Road in Patong Beach, night markets and the big buddha, plus a full day boat tour.

Absolute MMA Thailand Camp with Livia Giles and Luiza Monteiro

  • Where: Phuket, Thailand

Straight after the Absolute MMA Thailand Camp with Craig Jones is Absolute MMA’s women’s only camp.

This camp is taught by two champion black belts, Livia Giles and Luiza Monteiro. Each has a laundry list of BJJ achievements to their names and a wealth of experience. 

Similar to the other Absolute MMA Thailand Camps, this is held in the Absolute MMA gym in Rawai, which is a modern open air gym with plenty of space and equipment.

There are a number of extras included with the accommodation packages, such as tours to Bangla Road, the Big Buddha, a full day long boat island tour and more.

Jiu Jitsu Escapes Bali Camp

  • Where: Bali, Indonesia

Jiu Jitsu Escapes is a close-knit BJJ camp hosted by black belt world champions Gezary Matuda and Bruno Malfacine.

Each of the two announced six-day camps for 2019 are limited to 36 spaces and take place in Uluwatu, a world-class beach and surfing location in Bali.

There are 1.5 – 3 hours of gi and no-gi jiu jitsu training each day plus open mat opportunities. There’s also a daily yoga session and professional surf lessons.

The camp is held at Uluwatu Surf Villas and includes daily breakfast, lunch and dinner with a variety of Brazilian, Balinese and other international cuisines on offer.

Hidden Jiu Jitsu Thailand Camp

  • Where: Phuket, Thailand
  • When: 29 December 2019 – 4 Jan 2020

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate New Year’s while also immersing yourself in BJJ, this camp is for you.

The Hidden Jiu Jitsu camp is hosted by Henry Akins, a black belt under Rickson Gracie and the founder of the Hidden Jiu Jitsu system.

Hidden Jiu Jitsu camps are generally small group affairs so you get a more intimate experience and plenty of technical assistance from Henry.

The camp includes two 2-hour training sessions each day plus open mat time. There’s also a rest day during the camp with an optional group activity. 

This camp is being held at the Tiger Muay Thai Beachside in Phuket, so you’re also close to the nightlife and beaches which will come in handy when New Year’s rolls by!

Hidden Jiu Jitsu Costa Rica Camp

  • Where: Tamarindo, Costa Rica
  • When: 23 – 29 February 2020

Henry Akins’ second camp for 2020 is being held in the beautiful beach town of Tamarindo in Costa Rica. 

For those who don’t know, Henry is a blackbelt under Rickson Gracie. He’s known for his online Hidden Jiu Jitsu video library which is based on the principles taught to him by Rickson.

This camp includes two 2-hour training sessions per day and is limited to only 25 spots. This means you get more technical assistance and attention from Henry.

The camp is held at Hero Academy, a 3000+ square foot gym which is only a few minutes walk away from the beach.

Note that this camp doesn’t include accomodation.

BJJ Globetrotters Spring Camp Estonia

  • Where: Tallinn, Estonia
  • When: 27 April – 2 May 2020

The BJJ Globetrotters Estonia camp for 2020 is being held in Estonia’s beautiful medieval capital Tallinn.

The camp includes six days of training and is being held at 3D Treening, the largest BJJ and MMA gym in Estonia. 3D Treening is a 1000 square meter facility (approx 10,000 square feet) with large mat areas plus saunas, weights and showers.

Training runs from morning to night and includes both gi and no gi classes. There’s also scheduled open mat sessions too.

The announced instructors so far include:

  • Christian Graugart from BJJ Globetrotters
  • Priit Mihkelson, the head coach at 3D Treening and a black belt under Matt Thornton of SBG
  • Jorgen Matsi, professional MMA fighter and BJJ black belt

There’s optional accommodation at nearby hostels organised by BJJ Globetrotters, and there’s also an optional meal pack at a nearby restaurant which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

BJJ Globetrotters Iceland Camp

  • Where: Reykjavík, Iceland

One of the most interesting camps being held so far in 2020 is the BJJ Globetrotters camp in Iceland.

It’s being held at Mjolnir MMA, the largest MMA gym in the world. Mjolnir has 3000 square meters (approx. 32,000 square feet) of floor space and its own store, restaurant, bar and even barbershop on the premises! It also has a professional MMA cage, boxing ring, six training areas, saunas, hot tubs and a weightlifting area.

The camp includes six days of training from morning to evening. The bulk of the instructors are yet to be announced but there’ll be a range of different styles including BJJ, wrestling, judo and luta livre. There’ll be opportunities for drilling, sparring and asking instructors questions. 

Like many other BJJ Globetrotter camps, the Iceland camp also includes yoga classes and workshops on topics as diverse as photography and famous fights.

There’s also an optional bus tour which takes you around the Golden Circle, the famous 300km Iceland tourist loop which brings you to three famous sites: the Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area and the Gullfoss waterfall.

BJJ Globetrotters Summer Camp Germany 2020

BJJ Globetrotters’ Summer Camp is being held in the historic university town of Heidelberg in Germany. The facility being used for the camp is the large Olympiastützpunkt sports hall, so there’s plenty of mat space to train and stretch out on.

The camp is comprised of six days of training in both gi and no gi from morning until night. There are also open mat sessions to allow participants to roll, drill and ask instructors questions.

The instructors announced so far include BJJ Globetrotters’ founder Christian Graugart, Estonian BJJ legend Priit Mihkelson, American black belt Aaron Ross, and UK brown belt and yoga teacher Jack Clover.

If you don’t want to worry about where you’re staying or what you’re eating each day, BJJ Globetrotters also offers optional accommodation in the sports hall, and optional daily meals served in the nearby canteen.

This camp will also feature a free screening of the BJJ Globetrotters documentary, has a pub crawl, and has various workshops like other BJJ Globetrotters camps.

    In Bulgaria, summer 2019 from 12.08 till 18.08 is starting BJJ camp with BAGIRBJJ /coach Akim Raimovich – black belt Jiu Jitsu/ The camp will take place at Sport Generation Camp, Lozenec, Bulgaria on the beach – great spot for training and relaxation.
